Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan announced recently that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a grant of $65,357 to continue the CNMI Maternal and Child Health Data System Linkage and Training Initiative through FY 2012.

“The Commonwealth’s health system is struggling for funding,” said Sablan, “so every dollar of federal assistance is welcome.”

The grant is more than twice the $30,832 the Commonwealth received in 2011 for the data system. The multi-year project aims to provide the CNMI Department of Public Health access to a more comprehensive information database on maternal and infant health and aid in improving the well-being of women and children in the Marianas.

Funding for this grant is provided by the State Systems Development Initiative, a complement program to the Maternal and Child Health Block Grant.

President Barack Obama, in his FY 2013 budget proposal, requested $640 million in funding for this grant program, a $1 million increase from FY 2012.
