Contribution of ethnic groups to CNMI hailed
Lt. Gov. Jesus R. Sablan emphasized Saturday the tremendous contribution of the different nationalities living in the Commonwealth especially their share in the socio-economic development of the islands.
The diverse cultures existing in the CNMI highlights the key developments which are expected to have a profound influence on the future of today’s society.
“I commend the work of all of you — all different nationalities for your commitment to the development of all people in this Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands,” Mr. Sablan said.
He said the celebration of the 2nd International Festival of Cultures is a commendable activity complementing the other festivities and community events.
While politics and economics are equally important, Mr. Sablan said culture provides the meaning of human existence and probes into the real meaning of man’s existence.
As the Commonwealth’s population has become so diverse with the presence of many different nationalities, Mr. Sablan said he was also happy to see the concern for human rights on the island.
The festival of cultures also proves the interdependence of people highlighted by their genuine concern for life, peace, family and the environment.
According to Mr. Sablan, real development must take into account the people living in society especially the moral-cultural system and not just the political and economic factors.
Last Saturday’s parade focused on the key developments in terms of economic and demographic trends from a social perspective which would have profound influence on the future of the CNMI.
The festival saw the participation of the Filipino, Thai, Yapese, Marshall, Hawaiian and CNMI communities.
