MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Two earthquakes struck the northern and southern Philippines on Sunday, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The first quake, with a magnitude of 5.7, hit at 6:30 a.m. and was centered under the seabed about 32 miles west of Batangas province, on the northern main island of Luzon, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.

The earthquake was too deep to cause any damage, Vilma Hernandez of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said. Aftershocks were expected.

Another quake jolted the southern Philippines about three hours later.

The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 5.4, was centered under the seabed about 32 miles off Mati town in Davao Oriental province, Hernandez said.

The Philippines is located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common.
