Saipan to host PPA annual meeting
Utility officials, power managers as well as vendors and businessmen from across the Pacific will convene on Saipan next year to hold their general meeting, according to the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.
The Pacific Power Association (PPA) will mark their 10th year here where the first anniversary was also celebrated, said CUC Executive Director Timothy P. Villagomez.
Originally created by the United Nations, the organization was founded to carry on the work by the U.N. to build energy sources and develop underprivileged, remote and rural islands and nations in the region.
Mr. Villagomez was elected chairman last year for a three-year term. PPA held its last general meeting in Brisbane, Australia from Aug. 21 to 24, 2000.
The 2001 meeting is scheduled on Aug. 13 on Saipan where it expects to draw over 250 people.
“Our utility brings a precious gift of tourism to the CNMI, increasing the conference and business-travel here,” Mr. Villagomez said. “PPA brings over 250 people who frequent restaurants, like to shop and pump money into the economy.”
He has appointed Ben Mesa, CUC power division manager, and Pamela Mathis, information officer, as co-chairs in preparation for next year’s meeting.
“I certainly encourage the [CUC] board to help support our staff, and our staff will be reaching out into the community to develop its Planning Committee,” said the utility chief.
