Federal District Court Judge Alex R. Munson yesterday presided over the swearing in of CNMI Assistant Attorney General James J. Benedetto as a special assistant United States attorney.

The special cross-designation allows Mr. Benedetto to work with the U.S. Attorney’s office in Saipan in cases involving joint prosecution of defendants under CNMI and federal laws.

The cooperation between the two offices will allow more defendants who violate both CNMI and federal laws to be convicted and sentenced in federal court, and to serve their prison sentences in federal facilities. Use of the federal prisons saves the CNMI taxpayers the expense of housing prisoners in the local prison and frees up much needed bed space in the CNMI’s crowded facility.

Attorney General Herbert Soll and Assistant United States Attorney Greg Baka witnessed the swearing in.
