Robbery suspect allowed to post $10K property bond

Superior Court associate judge Joseph N. Camacho yesterday allowed a robbery suspect to post a $10,000 property bond.
Camacho determined the two proposed third party custodians for defendant Benjamin Jones Castro Jr. as suitable.
Camacho placed Castro under house arrest.
Arraignment will be on March 26 at 9am.
Assistant attorney general Darren Robinson opposed Castro’s application for a bail of $10,000 property bond.
Robinson said at a minimum, Castro should be required to post bail at least some cash.
Robinson said the defendant launched an unprovoked attack on an employee of Hollywood Video and fled with the money from the cash register.
Robinson said Castro is involved in another drug-related case.
“Based on these two facts, the Commonwealth considers Defendant a danger to the community,” the prosecutor said.
A female cashier was injured when Castro allegedly robbed Hollywood Video in San Jose last Feb. 24. She, however, still managed to jot down the license plate of the suspect’s getaway vehicle, enabling the police to identify him.
Castro surrendered to the police last week.
The victim sustained moderate injuries to her right jaw. The suspect reportedly took $379 cash from video shop’s cash register.
Police said Castro locked the cashier in a rear chokehold using his left forearm. When she attempted to free herself, the suspect allegedly punched her on the jaw.
