The Public School System conducted yesterday a final inspection of the newly constructed Kagman Elementary School following reports of funding problems which delayed its opening.

Claiming that funding sources has already been identified, Ed Tenorio, special assistant for budget and management, explained that currently the Office of the Governor and the PSS are working closely to discuss possible refining of fund allocation since the elementary school is set to open a month before the fiscal year begins.

“There is no funding problem. We are currently discussing with PSS the additional funding they have requested and we’re looking at some funding sources. This is an important opening and one of the governor’s top priorities is education,” said Mr. Tenorio.

The PSS, Mr. Tenorio explained, earlier requested for additional funding of $640,000 to cover the school’s personnel and over all operations.

Tagged as the largest PSS Capital Improvement Project undertaking in 15 years, the $6 million Kagman school comprised of eight artistically-designed, color-coordinated buildings which include a cafetorium, a library, and room to accommodate more than 30 computer units.

The structures are also expected to withstand typhoons as PSS has approved the installation of sophisticated typhoon shutters in all classroom windows and joint expansion to protect the building in case of tremors.

Present during yesterday’s onsite inspection were House Committee on Education Chair Brigita Dlg. Ichihara, Special Advisor for Finance and Budget Mike Sablan, and other education and government officials.

The 27-classroom campus has the capacity to hold more than 675 students, according to PSS CIP Coordinator Chris Fryling.

To oversee Kagman operation, Education Commissioner Rita H. Inos has tasked San Vicente Elementary School Vice Principal Frances Taimanao to take on the position as acting principal of the new school until such time that a permanent administrator is appointed.

The school’s staff and personnel will include 26 regular teachers, one special education teacher, and other staff.
