Guest worker dies in staff house fire
A female nonresident worker died when a fire broke out in one of the rooms at L&T staff house in Gualo Rai Tuesday at around 6 p.m., according to the Department of Public Safety.
Police reports said the guest worker, a Chinese national, was found in Room 217 of the three-story building in REM Center where the fire started. DPS withheld the identity of the worker.
Fire fighters and police officers arrived at the scene after receiving a call from the building’s security guard to report the incident. Workers staying in the staff house were immediately evacuated as heavy smoke was coming out from the victim’s room.
According to police reports, fire fighters had difficulty opening the room because the victim’s body was blocking the door. Fire fighters found the Chinese worker in a sitting position leaning against the wall and covered with a blanket. The medics who checked on the condition of the victim found a red stain on her face, police said.
The woman was rushed to the Commonwealth Health Center where she was pronounced dead at around 10:25 p.m. by Dr. Kauri Roy. The Tribune has learned that an autopsy has been requested by DPS in order to determine cause of death.
Tan Holdings Corp. said it was “shocked and deeply saddened by the death of a female employee” at a staff house in Gualo Rai.
“We are fully cooperating with the Department of Public Safety in the investigation of this tragic incident. Since this matter is under police investigation, it would be completely irresponsible for us to speculate regarding the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident,” said Steven P. Pixley, legal counsel of THC.
Tan Holdings expressed confidence in the DPS investigation and commended the police for its immediate response to a 911 call by the company’s security personnel.
