House Committee on Education Brigida Ichihara has pledged to look into the plight of the Public School System which is facing financial troubles in operating the newly-constructed Kagman Elementary School.

In an interview with reporters, the congresswoman said she would back any initiative by the Board of Education in seeking Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio’s aid to provide extra funding to hire the necessary full-time staff for the new campus.

“I am sure the government will find something to help them. In the past, if there’s a problem about money, they always found ways to resolve it,” said Ms. Ichihara.

The legislator added that the government cannot afford to keep its children stagnant outside of school. “We cannot send students to a class that’s inoperable,” she said.

Kagman Elementary School, now nearing completion, still lacks the appropriate number of staff to run its operation.

Out of more than 700 children who have expressed desire to enroll in the school, only 675 can be accommodated.

PSS still needs manpower to fill in positions for security personnel, teacher aides, counselors, and other staff members.

The six-million-dollar Kagman school has a well-conceptualized architecture and modern amenities.

The school’s project contractors have less than 45 days to perform the finishing touches to the eight-building campus situated in the Kagman district.

The campus is comprised of 27 fully air-conditioned classrooms, where class size is at 25 students per room.

The school also features a 675-capacity cafeteria, a library, and room to accommodate more than 30 computer units. Students will be provided their own lockers.
The campus is also complete with spacious parking area, a baseball field, and basketball court. Still to be constructed are playground facilities for young grade schoolers.

The school buildings are built to withstand typhoons with the installation of sophisticated typhoon shutters in all classroom windows.

The National Office Supply will provide desks, chairs, lockers, and cabinets.
The campus is expected to be ready for occupancy by Aug. 1, 2000 in time for the school opening. (MM)
