Department of Public Safety Commissioner Charles W. Ingram yesterday vowed to press charges against corrections facility officers who are found negligent of their job which led to the Easter Sunday jailbreak.

DPS Internal Affairs is still conducting investigation on the incident which led to the escape of three convicted felons — Jesse James B. Camacho, 20, and Kurt M. Taisacan, 22, and Luis Deleon Guerrero Camacho, 51.

“We will not allow them to get away with this once the investigation shows that they should be held responsible. They will either be charged administratively or criminally,” he told an interview at the DARE graduation last night.

Mr. Deleon Guerrero Camacho was apprehended four hours after the escape. Mr. Camacho and Mr. Taisacan, surrendered at around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday for fear of their lives after they were tagged as armed and dangerous by the police.

At the same time, the Criminal Investigation Division is still interrogating each of the 20 inmates who were confined in Cell A of the main facility where a fire started.

According to DPS Spokesperson Rose Ada, the inmates protested the prison lockdown imposed by corrections officials following Sunday’s jailbreak which resulted in the suspension of their privileges. The angry inmates burned magazines, books and papers inside Cell A.

Ms. Ada said DPS was able to contain the fire and evacuated the inmates immediately within 30 minutes the incident was discovered. All the 20 inmates are still undergoing interrogation.

Mr. Ingram said he hopes the Superior Court would make the sentence on the escapees to run consecutively and not concurrently to act as deterrent to further escapes.

Chief Criminal Prosecutor Kevin Lynch said he is still waiting for the report of the investigators so that his office can study the case and file the appropriate charges against inmates responsible for the fire incident.

The three escapees will be brought to court for their bail hearing today. Extent of the damage to the facility is still being assessed by the Fire Division although initial investigation showed it is minimal.
