Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio yesterday signed two new laws, one providing compensation for elected members of the municipal council on each district in the CNMI, and the other, switching capital improvement projects on Rota.

Under Public Law 12-3, each member of the municipal council is now entitled to a $60 compensation for a full-day meeting and no more than $30 for a half day or less each meeting.

This puts them at par with members of government corporations, councils, commissions, agencies and boards in the CNMI, who receive the stipend.

According to the governor, the measure allows members of the municipal council to be paid when attending official meeting as they were not previously covered under existing law.

However, a member who is employed by the Commonwealth shall receive his regular salary under administrative leave status in lieu of compensation for meetings held during working hours.

Public 12-4, on the other hand, amends an earlier CIP law that appropriated funds for infrastructure projects in the first senatorial district of Rota.

The changes reflect new CIP priorities drawn up by the local delegation which now include construction of courthouse in Tatachog village as well as power generation and distribution system improvements in some areas on the island.

“The changes proposed by this bill were recommended by the leadership of [Rota]. We continue to do our utmost to move projects efficiently and progressively throughout the fiscal year,” said Mr. Tenorio in signing the law.

The governor earlier has prodded lawmakers not to change the projects listed under his administration’s CIP master plan so as not to derail implementation of the critical projects. (BS)
