The Superior Court yesterday sentenced Kevin Iginoef to five years imprisonment after he pled guilty to the charge of aggravated assault of a 35-year-old Filipino contract worker a year ago.

In a plea agreement, Assistant Attorney General James Benedetto dropped the assault with a dangerous weapon charge against Mr. Iginoef.

Associate Judge John A. Manglona also ordered Mr. Iginoef to pay Jojo Diaz $30,000 in damages since the victim has been unable to work after he was savagely beaten on Jan. 7, 1999 in a beach area near Dr. Jack’s Restaurant in Susupe.

Mr. Diaz, an aircon mechanic, went to Grand Hotel with another Filipino for a drink after he inspected the aircon unit at his friend’s barracks. While drinking, he apparently got the ire of the bartender who secretly called his friends to assault Mr. Diaz at around 11:00 p.m.

The victim suffered a fractured skull and injuries in other parts of the body. After undergoing operation at the Commonwealth Health Center, Mr. Diaz was brought to Manila for therapy. He came back immediately to pursue the case against his attackers.
