27 months for man in alien smuggling
A Chinese national was sent to 27 months in prison after he pled guilty in the federal court to a charge of attempted alien smuggling involving one of the five boats that were caught by U.S. authorities trying to enter Guam illegally early last year.
Wen Shen Guo, 30, from Kang Nau, Fujian province of the People’s Republic of China, will be under supervised release for 24 months after serving out the jail sentence handed down yesterday by Judge Alex R. Munson.
A community work service of 400 hours was also imposed as well as a $100 assessment fee, although Judge Munson waived payment of fine of between $15,000 to $50,000.
Mr. Wen appealed to the court for a lighter sentence to allow him to return to China as soon as possible to take care of his sick mother.
Upon release from prison, he could face deportation proceedings or be under supervised release, according to court documents.
Two other charges filed earlier against Mr. Wen in connection with the incident were dismissed by the court as provided under a plea agreement he signed with U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The federal government charged a total of 30 suspected alien smugglers who were caught in separate occasions by U.S. Coast Guard while attempting to ship a total of around 600 illegal Chinese immigrants near the territorial waters of Guam between April to June last year.
These undocumented aliens were later sent to temporary shelters put in place by both CNMI and Washington authorities on Tinian for processing, while filing charges against alleged smugglers.
