Basa gets 8 years for carjacking
U.S. District Court Judge Alex R. Munson has sentenced Melvin N. Basa Friday to eight years and six months imprisonment after pleading guilty to carjacking and affecting commerce by robbery.
U.S. Assistant Attorney Dave Wood said the court imposed a lesser penalty to Mr. Basa after he cooperated to the prosecutors by immediately confessing his participation in the crime.
Earlier, Judge Munson sentenced Jeffrey Sablan Basa to 11 years in prison for charges of carjacking, robbery and felon in possession of firearm. The two Basa’s together with Jeronimo S. Ada were ordered to pay their three victims and the Commonwealth Health Center the sum of $7,439.
Investigation showed that on July 11, 1999 Wu Guo Quing left his pickup with the engine running at the ABCD market in Koblerville. The victim, who came from the laundry beside the market, saw his 1992 Mazda vehicle being driven away by a group of men.
Instantly, Mr. Wu jumped onto the back of his pickup. About 200 yards after, the pickup stopped and another vehicle pulled over from behind. Within minutes, the men on board these two vehicles started beating him up. They hit Mr. Wu’s head with a hard object.
Still not satisfied, they took Mr. Wu’s pickup, followed by friends in the other vehicle, proceeded to Jia Jia store in Chalan Piao where they robbed the Fleming Horumi Ueda and his wife Jia Jia Jeng Ueda. They destroyed the store, stabbed Mr. Ueda and fled with $500.
