While some of his colleagues have issued critical statements on the nomination of Herbert D. Soll as Attorney General, Senate Vice President Thomas Villagomez yesterday said he is keeping an “open mind” on the issue.

Mr. Villagomez, a member of the Executive Appointments and Governmental Investigations Committee, said he believes that Mr. Soll is more than qualified to handle the job as he has worked on Saipan for a long time as a Superior Court judge.

“I will not make any pre-judgment on his case. I will not immediately jump to conclusions on what we have been hearing. I have to wait for that time when the committee hears his side,” he said.

A hearing officer at the Department of Labor and Immigration, Mr. Soll’s nomination was sent to the Senate immediately for its advice and consent as provided for under the CNMI Constitution.

Mr. Soll, 63, said his appointment to the critical post and his respect for Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio had forced him out of retirement.

Senate Floor Leader Pete Reyes, also a member of the EAGI, welcomed his nomination but said Mr. Soll’s nomination will still be under consideration. He, however, said the Senate Committee will take action on whether to reject or accept his nomination unlike the earlier decision on Deputy Attorney General Maya B. Kara, whose nomination they asked the governor to recall.

It is not yet certain as to when the EAGI will tackle Mr. Soll’s appointment, although Mr. Reyes stressed they will act on it as soon as possible. (LFR)
