Boy Scouts Week proclaimed
Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio yesterday promised the Boy Scout leaders that he will look into the possibility of setting aside a piece of public land for the Boy Scouts to train, camp, and possibly a permanent office space.
During the brief signing ceremony at the Governor’s Conference Room declaring the week of February 6-12 as Boy Scouting Week, the governor said in response to a question that he will work closely with District Chair Ramon G. Villagomez and Marianas Public Land to secure a piece of property for the scouts.
Boy Scout officials from different troops pointed out that they have been moved from one area to another during the past 15 years as public lands they were assigned to were given to private developers, the latest being Obyan Beach at the southern end of Saipan.
Boy Scout Coordinator Al Saures said his office was also moved twice from the Ada Gym in Susupe, to Garapan, and is now temporarily occupying an office space on Capitol Hill.
At the signing ceremony witnessed by several scout troops, Mr. Saures outlined activities planned for that week which ends with a recognition dinner on Feb. 12 at Susupe Beach Park at 5:30 p.m. At that time, awards will be presented in different categories by Mr. Villagomez. The governor is listed as one of the guest speakers including House Speaker Benigno R. Fitial and Bob Jones, vice-president of Aloha Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
