NMC instructor publishes 2nd book translation

  A full-time faculty member of Northern Marianas College, Marcelo González, has recently published his second book translation, the Spanish edition of Gunboat Democracy: US interventions in the Dominican Republic, Grenada and Panama (2006).

Published in December as Democracia a la Fuerza. Intervenciones Estadounidenses en la República Dominicana, Granada y Panamá by Spain’s Editorial Manuscritos, the book provides an in-depth analysis of these three interventions in the context of regime-change and nation building in Central America and the Caribbean.

According to González, “The importance of this translation for its target market in Spain and Latin America is that it provides, as Dr. Robert Synder of Southwestern University has pointed out, a convincing counter argument to the notion that U.S. military interventions are always motivated by less than virtuous reasons, and that they always leave the countries in question in worse condition in terms of their democratic institutions.”

“In short, I translated it to provide Spanish-language readers around the world with a well-researched, balanced perspective from a widely published and well-respected U.S. political scientist,” González added.

González is an English and Spanish instructor in NMC’s Department of Languages & Humanities, as well as a certified translator. Before joining NMC, González taught English in several Spanish-speaking countries, including Spain, Chile, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. He holds a master’s degree from the Graduate School of Translation, Interpretation & Language Education of the Monterey Institute of International Studies. His previous book translation was The Development of Literary Blackness in the Dominican Republic published by South America’s Editorial Abya-Yala as Negritud literaria en la República Dominicana. The author, Dr. Russell Crandall, is a fellow at the Center for American Progress and an associate professor of Political Science at Davidson College. The author of several books on U.S. policy in Latin America, including The United States and Latin America after the Cold War (published by Cambridge University Press), Dr. Crandall has served as an advisor in the administrations of presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and recently completed a term as director for the Western Hemisphere at the National Security Council.

Named one of the best books of 2007 by the journal Foreign Affairs, the original English edition is available on Amazon, as will the Spanish edition very shortly.
