DEQ raises Red Flag on Garapan Fishing Dock
The Division of Environmental Quality has raised a warning sign at the Garapan fishing dock, advising the public not to fish or swim in this area.
According to a press release from DEQ, samples collected from the Garapan fishing dock contained excessive concentrations of at least one of the bacteriological indicators, which exceeded the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards.
DEQ analyzes water samples collected from Saipan’s recreational beaches and storm drainage’s every Wednesday.
Samples collected from the certain locations contained excessive concentrations of two fecal indicator bacteria (fecal coliform and anterococci), that exceeded the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards. These bacteria can indicate the presence of human and animal waste in the water.
In order to adequately address public health concerns, DEQ has given the location a Red Flag and advises the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of these locations for the next 48 hours or until notified.
The Division of Environmental Quality analyzes samples of marine recreational and storm drainage water from 13 locations on the Saipan’s coast. DEQ welcomes all inquiries as to the quality of the beach water.
