They don’t serve milk in prison. This was one of the reasons why the three inmates, Shawn Appleby, Melvin Basa and Jeronimo Ada, escaped from jail.

And what’s worse?

Inmates at the Division of Corrections facility are being served with what they described as “lousy food,” including beef steak, chicken curry, pork adobo, peaches, pears, and chocolate cake –— in an apparent violation of their constitutional rights.

A copy of sample menu catered by Natibu’s Kitchen to DOC indicates that the inmates are being served three full meals every day.

The menu for breakfast consists of garlic rice or fried rice, ham, bacon, vegetables, sausage, eggs, milk and coffee.

The lunch menu includes red rice, chicken chopsuey, chicken curry, pork steak, beef with onions, beef steak, pot roast, peach, pears, apple, fruit cocktail, and fruit juices.

Beef estafau, fried chicken, meat loaf, pork with toma sauce, all kinds of cakes and fruit juices are scheduled for dinner.

Sources at the Department of Public Safety said DOC has contracted the service of Natibu’s Kitchen to cater meals because the inmates had complained of the food being served by DOC’s previous caterer early this year.

Sources said the department has a budget of approximately $350,000 a year for the DOC inmates’ food. The food budget per inmate is $7 for each meal, or $21 a day for the three full meals.

On Wednesday, Appleby, Basa, and Ada, wrote to Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio, apologizing for the Oct. 10 jailbreak.

They said they were forced to escape because of the inhuman conditions at the DOC facility, which they described as mosquito-infested, with clogged bathrooms and toilets.

They have also complained that they were being treated like animals, and that they were not served fruits and milk.
