Morgen vows to protect workers’ rights, businessmen

Reelectionist Sen. Morgen Tenorio vowed Friday that he will continue to protect the workers’ rights and the interest of the business community.
“I will continue to balance the interest of both sides,” said Tenorio during his fundraising campaign attended by hundreds of supporters. When he gets reelected, Tenorio said he will be focusing on education, specifically on the apprenticeship of students to prepare them for a job in the private sector.
With only 15 percent of the graduating high school students expected to go to college, Tenorio said he wants to make sure that at least 80 percent would pass the necessary training that will qualify them to enter the labor market.
This can only be done through a partnership with the business community, he said. “I have committed myself to that and I will work with the business community for assistance in terms of guidance in the service training,” said Tenorio.
In stimulating the business climate in the CNMI, the senator said this can be carried out through a partnership between the CNMI government and the business sector. “It is not just leaving the private sector alone, the government should maintain its partnership with businesses. I would like to be a catalyst in bringing the two groups together,” he said.
Tenorio has proposed the Commonwealth Mandatory Health Care Act of 1999 which seeks to provide health insurance to employees. He has assured the business community that he is willing to make the necessary amendments to the proposed measure to make sure that it does not jeopardize their operation.
The measure, which was patterned after Hawaii, requires employers to provide a prepaid health care plan that will include hospital benefits, out-patient care, surgical services, medical consultations, diagnostic laboratory services, maternity benefits and substance abuse treatment.
