Grace Christian students win big in two art contests

(Contributed Photo)  Six Grace Christian Academy students won in two art contests sponsored by different government agencies.

Second-graders Karina Dilse, Clerisse Dacumos, and Richard Steele won first, second, and third place respectively in the K-2 category for the 2012 Chamorro and Refaluwasch Lunar calendar poster contest sponsored by the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council.

The theme of the competition was “Climate Change Impacts on the Islands.” The theme focused on how indigenous knowledge and practices can prepare the community to adapt and survive the impacts of climate change.

The students’ winning artworks were featured in the 2012 Chamorro and Refaluwasch Lunar Calendar.

The banquet and awarding of prizes was held at the Hibiscus Hall, Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan on Monday, March 5, 2012.The winners were accompanied by their art teacher, Esther Manzano, 2nd grade homeroom teacher Rachel Epperson, and GCA principal Marsha Owens.

Also, three sixth grade students won in the Energy Calendar Poster Contest sponsored by the CNMI Energy Division of the Department of Public Works with the theme, “Turning works into Action. Turn Action into Results.”

The winning posters of Te’ Inah Blas Diaz, Hyeong Cham Im, and Peggy Aizell Pixley were published in the 2012 Energy Division Calendar. Officers from the Energy Division visited the winning schools and awarded energy saving kits and gift certificates to the winning students. (GCA)
