U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) is scheduled to visit the Northern Marianas on Aug. 18th and is expected to meet with Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio and other island officials.

Considered one of the more liberal members of the Senate, Harkin will be on the island for 12 hours and will be accompanied by a relative.

Juan N. Babauta, CNMI resident representative to Washington, has arranged the forthcoming visit after the Office of Insular Affairs referred Harkin’s request to his office.

Harkin is “closely associated with organized labor and he is known for his interest in the issues of child trafficking and child labor in foreign countries,” Babauta said in his memorandum to Tenorio.

He is a ranking minority member of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, while he also seats as member of the committees on Appropriations; Health, Education, Labor and Pensions as well as Small Business.

Harkin’s visit came after House Resources Committee Chairman Don Young (R-Alaska) and other members of the his panel toured the Commonwealth last February.
