Rosario Elameto was elected yesterday as new chair of the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation Board of Directors, replacing Juan S. Dela Cruz who resigned last month from the policy-making body.

Elameto, who has represented Carolinian and Women to the board since 1994, won majority of the votes during a CUC board meeting yesterday which also saw the swearing-in of three new directors.

Jesus Guerrero from Saipan is the new vice chairman and Laura I. Manglona is the new secretary.

Manglona, who was re-appointed to the board representing Rota, Frank T. Flores and Edward C. Sablan took their oath of office at the meeting. Both Flores, a former CUC employee, and Sablan are recent appointees by the governor.

They joined two other board directors, Benjamin Sablan and Guerrero.

Other officers of the board are E. Sablan, finance committee; Flores, operations; B. Sablan, personnel; and Guerrero, telecommunications.

In an interview, Elameto said she would prioritize critical projects of the government-owned utility firm, including the long-stalled 80-megawatt power project on Saipan and sewage construction on the island.

On the clamor for power rate reduction, she vowed to study the proposal to help CUC customers cope with the bad times.

“Even if we raise or lower, we are the board directors and we will be involved in all the (process) because we are all paying water, electricity and sewer,” Elameto explained. “We will look into the matter for the betterment of the Commonwealth.”

This is the second time that she has assumed chairmanship of the CUC board following her one-year stint in 1995.

Executive Director Timothy P. Villagomez hailed the new elected officers of the board, saying his administration will work with them to continue to provide efficient services to the community.

“I am very proud of the new board members,” he said.
