A jobless man was charged yesterday in court for shoplifting goods worth $500 at the Duty Free Shop Saturday.

Based on reports, Alexander Malechenko, a Russian national, stole a pair of sunglasses and a bottle of perfume and hurriedly left the premises of DFS.

However, the store’s security personnel cornered the suspect at a construction site near the business establishment a few minutes after he fled DFS.

In his court testimony, Malechenko said he came to Saipan two years ago as a contract worker and was employed for a year at the James Com nightclub in Garapan. He has remained unemployed since his contract expired in 1998.

Meanwhile, an unidentified local male threatened a sales clerk with a knife after he was refused purchase of a liquor.

According to a police report, the suspect, who was described in his late teens or early 20’s, tried to buy a bottle of wine at Xing-Xing store in Dandan, but was refused after he failed to produce his I.D.

The suspect reportedly got mad and threatened the sales clerk with a knife. But the victim was armed with a pepper mace and sprayed it on the suspect’s face who hurriedly left the store. Sheila D. Amor
