Athletes of the Month for April 1999

Quincy Johnson ,10, – Quincy competed in the A Swimming Championships on Guam and in swimming in eight individual events, winning three 1st places, three 2nd and two 3rds. He lowered his time in every event, from 1-2 seconds in the 50 m and 100 m events and by 38 seconds in his 400 m freestyle. He also brought home the High Point Trophy for the 10 years and under age group.

Tamiko Winkfield,13, – Tamiko competed in the A Champs on Guam, swimming 10 individual events and two relays. She is a distance swimmer and barely lost to teammate Xenavee Pangelinan in the 800 m and 1500 m freestyle events. Tammy broke her sister Audra’s age group record for the 1500 m of 20:25:38, taking second place. She won the third place High Point Trophy for her age group, although she swam several events in the Senior Division which did not count for her age group. She also won 1st, three 2nd and two 3rd places.

Athletes of the Month

Melvin Sakisat – Mel is a veteran softball player playing both fast pitch and slow pitch softball. He recently garnered the “Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the 1999 Men’s Fast pitch Season League. Aside from that he was the Batting King, had the Most Doubles and Most Runs Scored. He consistently takes home a wagon full of trophies after every league championship.

Xenavee Pangelinan – Xenavee is the NMI’s top swimmer, and competed in 12 individual events in the A Champs, breaking one more age group record in the 200 m breast and one national record in the 1500 m freestyle. She easily won the High Point Trophy for senior girls. Xen also brought home 10 1st, one 2nd and one 4th place ribbons.

Other athletes nominated by their associations was Sho Saso in Swimming.

Outstanding performance

NMASA would also like to congratulate the following athletes for outstanding performances during this month: Jeff Race for winning the Chamorro Open on Guam, Jill Pierce who broke the NMI National Record in the 200 m breast stroke, clocking 2:55.15 while on Guam, and Seug Gin Lee and Tracy Feger for their outstanding swims during the A Champs.
