Barely 24 hours since they bolted out of the Division of Corrections, Joseph Bowei and Ryan Babauta turned themselves in Tuesday night.

Bowei was convicted of first-degree murder. Babauta, who twice escaped from prison, is serving time for involuntary manslaughter. Both were accompanied by family members.

The six convicts, who are still on the loose, are Luis Camacho, William Sablan, Edwin Blas, Vicente Aldan Jr., Arcel Busto and Jeffrey Celis.

Camacho was convicted for sexual abuse; Sablan for several counts of assault, battery and robbery; Blas for attempted rape; Aldan for second-degree murder; Busto for second-degree murder; and Celis for robbery, burglary and theft.

The Department of Public Safety continued an islandwide manhunt and advised the community to be on the lookout for these convicts.

Photos of the escapees were sent out to major supermarkets, and DPS officers went on air to alert the public.

Calls have been pouring in.

“We are getting a lot of calls from the public and we are following up the tip given to us,” DPS spokesperson Rose Ada said.

DPS is also swamped with calls inquiring about safety while these six men are still on the loose.

“We received calls asking if it’s all right to continue with their daily routine,” she said. “Of course, everybody is concern and they have every reason to be concerned.”

After receiving the advisory from DPS, the Public School System immediately alerted schools to take measures to ensure safety on campus.

Acting Principal Andie dela Cruz of William S. Reyes alerted school support staff to take extra care in moving around the campus and to report strangers spotted inside the campus.

San Vicente school Principal Martha Haberman stayed late until all the students who were waiting for their ride were picked up by their parents. Female teachers were also discouraged from working late.

Grace Christian Academy was also closely monitoring its grounds and students were alerted on the news, according to the school principal, the Rev. Mary Kinsella.

While the community takes extra precaution, DPS is still investigating the security breakdown over at DOC last Monday night that allowed eight inmates to escape.

Meanwhile, both Bowei and Babauta will face additional charges for last Monday’s escape.
