MMAC Committee’s note: As we mark the 10th anniversary of the Marianas March Against Cancer, the 2012 MMAC committee would like to honor and recognize the efforts of our teams for their untiring support in the fight against cancer.

Team IT&E/Saipan Southern High School will be participating anew in the 2012 Marianas March Against Cancer slated for April 27 to 28 at the Hopwood Jr. High School field in Chalan Piao.

Led by team captains Shirley Dotts and Arisa Sakai Peters, Team IT&E/SSHS said they want to take part in the this year’s MMAC “because we care.”

IT&E has been involved with the annual event since its inception under Relay for Life while SSHS has been involved for the past three years.

“Who doesn’t have a relative, friend and/or coworker who’s been touched by cancer?” asked the team.

The team, they said, was formed when former Commonwealth Cancer Association board member Bobbie Grizzard was conducting an outreach activity to raise money for cancer.

“We sent out an email to IT&E employees for volunteers. About three years ago, we partnered with SSHS because we wanted to help get the schools involved. We knew that schools wanted to participate, too, but paying the fee was difficult for them. We pay their fee and in return we get a bunch of enthusiastic students and instructors helping us out with creative ideas for raising money and the various competitions,” the team said.

Team IT&E/SSHS, whose favorite part of the event is the overall camaraderie with their members and volunteers, said they plan to sell food and drinks as well as raffle off great prizes.

They urged others to form their own teams because it’s fun and it’s for a worthy cause. “Let’s do everything we can to fight cancer!”

All proceeds raised at the MMAC will be spent entirely in the CNMI through cancer awareness programs, patient assistance, and other cancer-related activities.
