Superior Court associate judge Joseph N. Camacho yesterday released on bail Servando C. Regis, a former police officer who allegedly stole $3,500 cash by deceiving a customer of a car shop.

Camacho allowed the 37-year-old Regis to post $300 or 10 percent of $3,000 cash bail, plus $2,700 unsecured bond.

The judge found the defendant’s proposed third party custodian suitable.

Regis will be arraigned on March 12 at 9am.

In the government’s opposition to bail modification, assistant attorney general James B. McAllister said based on defendant’s theft in this case and statements from his former employer, Regis seems to have developed a habit of “ripping off” unsuspecting victims.

Police arrested Regis on Monday.

Detective Alexander Sakisat stated in his report that the victim, Emilio Santos, reported that he made several payments to Regis totaling $3,500 for the repair of his car.

Police learned that Regis used to work as a runner for TBK Auto Shop, but was no longer employed there.
