Two staffers of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library are currently on Rota to train the two full-time employees of the Rota Antonio C. Atalig Memorial Public Library, which had its soft opening on Monday.

Children’s Library associate Erlinda Naputi and Information Technology Center coordinator Roy Rechebei are on Rota to assist their staff on library-related capacity building matters, said executive director John Oliver Gonzales.

“Both will conduct basic familiarization sessions about proper and efficient use of IT and public library in general to impart and internalize upon the community of Rota the irreplaceable value and vital role our public libraries play in our constant search for knowledge and an educated and informed citizenry in a thriving and vibrant island democracy like ours,” Gonzales told Saipan Tribune.

Gonzales said Naputi is training the Rota library staff on categorizing collections based on the Dewey decimal system, cataloging collections, uploading records, processing and labeling with customized bar codes, shelf reading, and proper shelving, among others.

Rechebei is installing eight computer desktops for the library-one computer to be used by the staff while the rest will be for library patrons.

He is also setting up the Rota library’s ITC by connecting the staff computer to the Horizons 7.5.1 Information Management System, the online catalog database for circulation, to provide patrons and staff with the same access as that of Saipan and Tinian.

Naputi and Rechebei will be on Rota until Friday to resolve any library-related issues.

“Our goal is to work with all public libraries to provide free computer and library basics classes to interested community members year round, in addition to offering our facilities as neutralizers and equalizers of our communities and a sanctuary and refuge from modern-day pressures and competing priorities,” added Gonzales.

The Rota Public Library is open Monday to Thursday from 9am to 5pm. For more information, call 532-0120.
