Manglona, Javier join nat’l scholars group
Incoming Mount Carmel School juniors Cathryn Javier and Thomas Maglona II have both been accepted into the National Society of High School Scholars. According to NSHSS scholarship director Susan Thurman, Manglona and Javier were accepted into the prestigious society because of their “outstanding academic achievement at Mount Carmel School.”
While outstanding in the classroom, Manglona and Javier have also been very successful in extracurricular activities. Active in numerous organizations, Manglona has established himself as a notable journalist in the CNMI and has led his school’s Journalism Club to cover stories in both print and video, including the club’s notable Knightly News broadcast program. Recently, Manglona represented the CNMI in the National Forensics League national competition and completed his summer studies at Stanford University as part of the Junior Statesmen of American program.
For her part, Javier has been active in forensic competitions, the National Honor Society, Mock Trial and the school’s Theatre Club. In her first year as a high school Mock Trial attorney, Javier won an award for Best Attorney at the CNMI High School Mock Trial Competition. This past year, she also completed distance education courses online and took the AP US History exam as a sophomore, a test normally taken by high school juniors.
Mount Carmel School president Galvin Deleon Guerrero was not surprised when he heard about their acceptance into the NSHSS. He said, “These are two of our finest Knights who epitomize the school’s trademark values of faith, excellence, and success, so I think it is very fitting that they be recognized this way.”
As members of the NSHSS, Javier and Manglona join a select group of students who have distinguished themselves with their academic excellence. According to the NSHSS, the society also “provides members with lifetime access to a variety of opportunities and resources, including scholarships, leadership development programs, service activities, and exclusive discounts.” The NSHSS also notes that it has “over $1,000,000 in scholarships to be awarded this upcoming academic year.”
The NSHSS was founded by Claes Nobel, whose family established the Nobel Prizes that reward individuals and organizations for world betterment. (PR)
