2 law students provide voluntary clerkship service to NMI Judiciary
Each year the CNMI Judiciary invites law students from across the nation to serve as summer law clerks and experience firsthand the inner workings of the judiciary by assisting the justices and judges with research and writing.

One of two interns the Supreme Court welcomed this summer, Tom P. Mitsch, said, “I come from Apple Valley Minnesota and in the fall will be starting my second year of law school at the University of Texas. The orientation of my studies is toward business law and I expect to do firm work after graduation, or perhaps work as a Judge Advocate General for the Navy or Air Force.”
Speaking about his impression of the Marianas, Mitsch said: “In addition to the natural beauty here, I have found the island inhabitants to be friendly, welcoming people content not to do things in needless haste. We have both enjoyed the hiking, swimming, and trying the native cuisine. I am pursuing my diver’s certification.”
The second law clerk intern, Anthony E. Garcia, said of his background, “California is home, but I am an incoming third-year law student at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. I am trying to experience a wide variety of law studies, including trademark law. Saipan provides a great break from the hustle and bustle of our nation’s capital, and I would consider coming back to Saipan to practice law after graduation.”
Garcia explained their daily work routine: “We perform research and writing assignments for the clerks of the Supreme Court, and have worked to help update the court’s records of rules and procedures and had the opportunity to attend post-argument discussions held among the justices. We also assisted with the Judiciary’s recently completed Summer Pre-Law Program.”
Speaking of the interns, Chief Justice Alexandro C. Castro said, “They have provided valuable assistance to our work, [and] we’re greatly appreciative their having come out to the Northern Mariana Islands during the summer break in their studies.” (NMI Judiciary)
