AIC Marianas Inc. has begun its preparatory work for the construction of the Chalan Kiya-Kannat Tabla waterline connection that will enable 24-hour water service to these areas soon.

Commonwealth Utilities Corp. executive director Alan Fletcher confirmed with Saipan Tribune yesterday that AIC Marianas, after being awarded the contract to build the waterline connection, is now obtaining the necessary permits from local government agencies.

Another part of AIC Marianas preparatory work is the procurement of materials, survey, and staking work.

Fletcher said the new waterline is necessary to provide adequate water pressure to Chalan Kiya water customers and provide them with a more reliable water source from the Kannat Tabla reservoir.

“In addition this connection will improve system efficiency by enabling the elimination of the Duenas well, which is currently operating 24/7 and uses excessive energy,” he said.

According to him, the areas currently served by the Kannat Tabla reservoir will have 24-hour water service, “thus Chalan Kiya in turn will have 24-hour water service as well.”

The project is being funded by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. CUC awarded AIC Marianas a $173, 621 contract to install new six-inch ducile iron distribution waterline connecting the Kannat Tabla reservoir to the existing Chalan Kiya water distribution main line.

Construction may also include the replacement of various gate valves and relocation of water service laterals at designated areas within the Chalan Kiya village.

Fletcher noted that preparatory concrete work for the pipe supports for the new aboveground six-inch ducile iron pipe and the main PRV vault have been performed off the job site and are stored at the contractor’s storage yard.

“This project is in the construction phase of the project. As part of mobilization, the contractor is tasked to obtain all of the necessary permits from the local government agencies,” Fletcher said.

The expected project completion date is Dec. 19, 2014.
