ON BABAUTA’S FILING OF CANDIDACY
Inos: May the best man win
“May the best man win.”
Thus stated Gov. Eloy S. Inos over Wednesday’s filing of candidacies by former governor Juan N. Babauta and former senator Juan Sablan Torres for governor and lieutenant governor respectively.
In an interview with Saipan Tribune, Inos said he was hoping that Babauta would stay with the GOP instead of deciding to make a run as an independent candidate.
“That’s, of course, his desire and we will see and may the best man win,” the governor said.
Babauta said Wednesday that he and Torres are proposing to build a strong middle class, which is one of the things that the CNMI economy lacks.
Torres on the other hand stated that their solution is more concrete and long term, unlike the casino industry that may falter. He offered that one of their solutions is alternative power energy, from which the government could generate income as this will reduce utility rates and create savings instead of buying expensive oil.
Inos said he never claimed that casino is the answer, but that it provides a lot of the funds that will help restore some form of economic sustainability for the CNMI.
He said there’s not one solution per se.
“You’ve got to put all these things together until you’re able to come up with a one practical solution,” he said.
On alternative power, Inos said a cheaper fuel utility rate would of course allow for more disposable funds for the community.
Inos said they are still working on that alternative power energy, as “it’s all part of the plan.”
Babauta and Torres are both longtime Republicans. They are running as independents because the GOP rejected their request for a primary race.
