Mount Carmel School announced this week that the College Board has approved a new Advanced Placement course in Environmental Science that the school will offer in the upcoming 2014-2015 school year. Open to juniors and seniors, the course will introduce students to the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world.

“We’re very excited to offer this new course,” said school president Galvin Deleon Guerrero. “Not only will this course prepare our students for the growing ‘green’ jobs sector of the economy, but it will reinforce the need for better stewardship of our environment as we face challenges such as energy dependency, pollution, and global warming.”

According to the College Board, the new AP Environmental Science course is “is designed to be the equivalent of a one-semester, introductory college course in environmental science.” The College Board also notes, “The course requires that students identify and analyze natural and human-made environmental problems, evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and examine alternative solutions for resolving or preventing them.”

The new course will enhance the school’s AP program, which was one of the first programs on island when the school introduced AP English and AP History in 1998. The AP program enables willing and academically prepared students to pursue college-level studies—with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both—while still in high school. Students who earn a qualifying score on an AP Exam are typically eligible to receive college credit and/or placement into advanced courses in college.

Mount Carmel School high school students will be able to sign up for the new course and all other courses when the school holds its Scheduling Fair on Thursday, July 17. For more information about the school and its programs, call 234-6184 or visit www.mountcarmelsaipan.com. (MCS)
