The Grace Christian Academy Lady Eagles soared to a regular season first place finish following a critical victory over the Marianas High School Lady Dolphins (MHS1) as the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization girls volleyball regular season concluded Thursday at the MHS Gymnasium.
MHS1 came out swinging and wrestled out the opening set, 25-22, but GCA kept its composure and pulled out the second set, 25-19, and held strong in the deciding set, 15-8.
The Lady Eagles finished the season with an 11-1 win-loss slate, its lone loss coming from defending champion Saipan International School Lady Geckos (SIS1).
Coincidentally, SIS1 was wrapping up its season at the same time on the other court against its sister squad, SIS2.
SIS1 handled the junior Lady Geckos in all three sets, 25-10, 25-20, and 15-1.
SIS1 was humbled this year with a second place seeding just in front of third-ranked MHS1 heading into the double-elimination postseason tournament, scheduled for this coming Friday and Saturday. Both SIS1 and MHS1 finished with 10-2 slates.
Tinian High School is expected to appear in the tournament and will be issued an automatic No. 4 seeding on the bracket.
The rest of the standings include SIS2 (5-7) in the fifth chair, Kagman High School’s Lady Ayuyus (4-8) in sixth, and MHS2 seventh (2-10). The opening rounds of the tournament begin at noon on Friday and will run hourly until 4pm. Then the series concludes on Saturday from 9am leading up to the finals at 11pm and noon, if necessary.
The champions will get their names etched on the MISO volleyball trophy; the winning school also gets to keep the trophy on display until next season.
