The driver of the car that hit an 11-year-old student along Middle Road in As Mahetog Wednesday afternoon was a male tourist, according to police yesterday.

Police officer Jason Tarkong said a Japanese tourist was driving the Toyota Camry that hit the boy.

Tarkong said the tourist was not arrested as further investigation was conducted.

Tarkong said the Department of Public Safety Central dispatched traffic police officers on Wednesday at 2:40pm to Chalan Pale Arnold (Middle Road) in As Mahetog by the entrance to a road leading to the Saipan Zoo for a reported auto-pedestrian crash.

The crash occurred on the southbound inner lane of the highway.

When police officers arrived at the scene, they saw a silver 2007 four-door Toyota Camry that sustained damage to the front right passenger side.

Also at the scene was a Public School System bus parked along the southbound lane.

Tarkong said preliminary investigation showed that an 11-year-old Palauan national was crossing the highway when the Toyota Camry hit him.

The Toyota Camry was traveling south on the inner lane when it hit the boy moments after he got off the bus.

Emergency medical technicians brought the boy to the Commonwealth Health Center for further treatment.

Dr. Trent Scheibe determined that the boy sustained multiple fractures in the right lower leg and was admitted for further observation.
