Marianas High School Varsity Lady Dolphins (MHS1) served the defending champion Lady Geckos of Saipan International School its second loss of the season in Tuesday’s Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization girls volleyball matchup at the MHS Gymnasium.
MHS1 heated up early in the duel and grinded out a win in the opening set, 25-21. The Lady Dolphins then carried its surge into the second set and capped a sound 25-12 victory for the nod.
SIS1 lit up MHS1’s reserves, 15-2, in the final set, but the former has some tidying up to do before next week’s postseason tournament.
Both teams left the contest with 9-2 win-loss slates and are tied for second place behind the red-hot Grace Christian Academy Lady Eagles.
GCA was also in the house on Tuesday and brushed off MHS’ Junior Lady Dolphins (MHS2) in three quick sets, 25-4, 25, 8 and 15-9, to remain at the front of the pack with a stout 10-1 record.
The adjusted standings leave SIS’ Junior Lady Geckos (SIS2) in fourth place with a 5-6 record; Kagman High School’s Lady Ayuyus in fifth with a 4-8 card; and MHS2 in sixth place at 2-10.
Notably, the standings were adjusted because Saipan Southern High School never officially fielding a team but were still included in the game schedule.
Some bye wins were granted because Marianas Baptist Academy won two out of six appearances before pulling out of competition; six teams now make up the field.
The regular season wrapped up yesterday with MHS1 hosting its rematch with GCA on the north court, while SIS2 called over big-sister SIS1 to the south end.
GCA can claim first place outright with a win, while an upset by SIS2 over SIS1 would drop the 2011 champs into the third seed. However, if GCA loses and SIS1 wins then the final standings will be determined by a three-way tiebreaker consequence, in which organizers will analyze the trios’ head-to-head scores, set by set.
MISO’s double-elimination postseason tournament is scheduled for March 2 and March 3 at the MHS Gym. Official game times and matchups will be announced next week.
