U.S. Interior Secretary Debra Anne “Deb” Haaland arrived on Saipan yesterday afternoon for a one-day visit.

Gov. Arnold I. Palacios said he and Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang welcomed Haaland at the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport.

Haaland, who flew in from Honolulu all the way to Saipan, will also be conducting site visits throughout the island.

Palacios and Apatang will have a scheduled meeting with Haaland today, Friday, at 8am, in the Office of the Governor’s conference room.

The U.S. Senate confirmed Haaland’s appointment in March 2021, making her the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary.

She served as chair of the New Mexico Democratic Party from 2015 to 2017 as the U.S. representative from New Mexico’s first congressional district from 2019 to 2021.
