Japanese male choir to perform at memorial sites
A male chorus group from Japan will arrive in the Marianas today, July 17, to conduct memorial performances at World War II memorial sites on Saipan and Tinian.
The visiting group is composed of 20 members of Roppongi Male Chorus ZIG-ZAG, which consists of well-known professionals in their fields like politicians, entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, artists, and others. They have performed in the Philippines, Palau, Marshall Islands, and other countries around the world, including at the world-famous Carnegie Hall in New York City, to honor the war dead of World War II.

“We’re very pleased to welcome ZIG-ZAG to the Marianas for this poetic tribute to those who lost their lives [on] Saipan and Tinian during the war,” said Marianas Visitors Authority managing director Christopher A. Concepcion. “Our islands are now a place of healing, peace, and rejuvenation, and these performances of honor reflect that. We are grateful for their visit.”
The first performance will be this morning at 11am at the site of the Japanese-era Donne Field Hospital on Mt. Tapochau, depending on the weather. Additional performances will be held at 2pm at Jigokudani, also known as Hell Valley, followed by a third performance at the Central Pacific Veterans Monument at Last Command Post in Marpi at 3:30pm. A performance will also be held on Tinian tomorrow, July 18, tentatively beginning at 1:30pm at Banzai Cliff at Puntan Carolinas.
