Palacios lifts price freeze
Saying the CNMI is no longer under an emergency declaration for Typhoon Mawar and that products are readily available, Gov. Arnold I. Palacios lifted on Friday the price freeze that was set in place on May 23, 2023, to prevent price gouging.
In rescinding Executive Order 2023-004, Palacios said the conditions necessitating a price freeze have now passed, making it appropriate to end the freeze.
The governor issued Executive Order 2023-004 last May 23, declaring a price freeze in the CNMI on gasoline, all foods, bottled water, beverages, ice, all clothing, and other items as the CNMI braces for an approaching Typhoon Mawar.
Palacios declared the price freeze pursuant to a declaration of significant emergency and state of major disaster he issued last May 22, per the Consumer Disaster Price Freeze Act.
In his Executive Order 2023-005 issued last Friday, Palacios said the CNMI is no longer under an emergency declaration and products are readily available, so the threat of shortages and price gouging no longer threatens the community.
Mawar’s powerful winds and strong rains last May 24 largely spared the CNMI, but severely damaged Guam’s power systems, affecting the power supply to over 52,000 customers. The damage on Rota wasn’t bad as the administration and the Rota Mayor’s Office had feared.
