The undefeated Lady Blue Jays took the W for Game 1 in the championship round of the women’s division in the 2023 Budweiser Belau Amateur Softball Association League playoffs at the DanDan Softball Field last Sunday.
In the sweltering heat, the Lady Blue Jays pummeled the Hot Shots with run after run, for a blowout 22-13 game.
The Blue Jays led early with nine runs just in the first two innings, but the Hot Shots replied with six of their own. The top of the lineup for the Hot Shots went into productivity mode as Brittany Luzama, Janica Lizama, and pitcher Janice Celis all had RBI singles.
Rayna Deleon Guerrero from the middle of the Lady Blue Jays’ lineup led off the third inning with a triple and opened up the watergates for more runs from her teammates. Christie Aldan brought her home with a single.
Keolani Rios got on base and was then brought home by another triple from Destiny Pangelinan, who scored on a two RBI home run by Kianu Aldan.
It was the Hot Shots’ turn to do some damage as they brought five runs in their at-bat, but at this point the Lady Blue Jays had a four-run lead, 15-11.
The Hot Shots’ Brittany Luzama, Ashley Aguon, and Penny Magofna all had RBI singles, while Janica Lizama had a double in the third inning.
Both teams put up goose eggs in the fourth inning and it was still anybody’s game, but the Lady Blue Jays found their swings in the fifth inning again and scored four runs. Christie Aldan hit a long triple, while Allanah Sablan brought her home. Keolani Rios reached base right after and was immediately brought home on Destiny Pangelinan’s home run.
The Hot Shots—who were hot early on—were doused as they could only conjure up two more runs for the rest of the game. The Lady Blue Jays scored three more runs and won the game with a nine run deficit.
Results of the men’s playoffs will be posted in the next issues of Saipan Tribune.
