Team Sufa is the men’s division pennant champion of the 2023 Budweiser Belau Amateur Softball Association League even as they fell to Peleliu, 24-26, last Sunday at the DanDan Softball Field.
Peleliu staged a well-timed rally in the bottom of the last inning as they hit in eight runs to steal the W from Sufa.
Heading into the last inning, Sufa had a 22-18 lead. They thought it was enough as they put up just two runs in their last at-bat. They should’ve brought in more runs as their pitching fell apart in the last inning and allowed Peleliu to capitalize and win by an 8-run rally.
Sufa’s Audie Maratita did put up two back-to-back home runs for a seven-RBI game, while teammate Ray Borja hit one out of the park himself.
For Peleliu, the game-changer was Alvin Salas who hit two homeruns—with a big one in the last inning that brought in three runs. Cartfield Sablan had one of his own in the sixth inning for two RBIs.
Aimeliik 1 Time 24, Momma Charo 14
Aimeliik 1 Time finally won a game but it was too little, too late as they were kicked out of contention heading into the playoffs.
They did go out with a bang as they defeated Momma Charo, 24-14.
Aimeliik rose from the bottom and rallied in the last inning as they put up 10 runs from two grand slams. Chris George then Chuezton Martin hit one grand slam each which was enough to put Momma Charo at bay.
Momma Charo claimed the seventh seed heading into the playoffs.
Asahi 16, Wazzup 8
Asahi said goodbye to Wazzup for the last time as they defeated them, 16-8.
Asahi is the No. 3 seed in the playoffs while Wazzup is out for the count.
It was a home run derby last Sunday as Asahi made three homeruns in as many innings.
The first home run was made by Marino Hiroichi in the second inning, the second was made by S.R Matsutaro in the next inning, and the last home run was made by Ish Masao in the last inning.
Wazzup was blanked through most of the game as they scored eight runs over only four innings.
Man Amigos 8, Hagu La’mun 7
Man Amigos is the fifth seed and managed to slip past sixth seed Hagu La’Mun, 8-7.
They were both at an even 7-7 heading into the last inning and as Hagu La’mun failed to drive in any runs in their last at-bat, gave the last chance for Man Amigos to walk it off.
And that they did as Man Amigos’ Joey Dela Cruz came in for the winning run.
Tokahao 11, Redmen 6
Defending champions Tokahao is the fourth seed and beat No. 8 Redmen, 11-6.
Tokahao put up the majority of their runs in the third inning with six and at this point had a four-run lead over the Redmen.
Then, Tokahao added four more runs in the next few innings off two RBI singles each by Manny Villagomez and Dave Attao. The Redmen was to put up just three more runs and were handed the loss as they could not catch up to Tokahao.
