Youth fishing nonprofit Tasi To Table will be holding its TTT Student Mini-Derby this Saturday, June 3, from 6am to noon at the Smiling Cove Marina.
TTT is also in search of fishermen willing to participate in the Mini-Derby and volunteer their time, knowledge, and resources to TTT’s student members. Fishermen will receive a gas stipend of $25 per student they can safely accommodate on their boat. Those interested can call the TTT office at (670) 234-8274 or send an email to tasitotable@gmail.com.
Gene Weaver, who is president of Tasi To Table, shared that close to 40 students will be taking part in this year’s Mini-Derby and that 10 boats have committed to taking part in this year’s Mini-Derby.
“The Student Mini-Derby is TTT’s signature year-end event for our students. We greatly thank the fishermen who have committed to be part of this event this year and in past years. To the students, we encourage you to learn as much as you can from your boat captains,” he said.

The TTT Student Mini-Derby is an event held at the end of every school year for TTT’s second-year students. The students are taken out to the water by volunteering boat captains to experience the fishing method of trolling. TTT expresses its deepest appreciation to the boat captains who support the youth and give their time to the students.
Last year, Carmelita II won the Tasi to Table Student Mini-Derby after catching a 28.4-lb wahoo in the waters off Saipan.
A total of 11 boats and 27 Saipan students participated in the derby, with captain Chief Justice Alexandro Castro of the Carmelita II leading the pack with the heaviest catch of the derby. (PR)
