Island Snapshots – June 2023
- DRONE SURVEY-Laquan Hansley, from Currie, North Carolina, launches an RQ-20B Puma drone to survey damage caused by Typhoon Mawar in Guam. A Combined Joint Task Force led by U.S. Army Pacific and Task Force West, or Joint Region Marianas, are the DoD representatives supporting FEMA and the governments of Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands as they recover from the devastation caused by Typhoon Mawar. The typhoon moved through the area as a Category 4 storm last May 24, bringing hurricane-force winds, heavy rain, and high seas marking the strongest storm to affect the island since Typhoon Pongsona in 2002. - ‘CHILDREN MATTER’-Childcare providers, children, and parents pose with Gov. Arnold I. Palacios and Lt. Gov. David M. - SOUTH KOREA OUTREACH-Gov. Arnold I. Palacios shakes hands with South Korea Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Vice Minister of Transport Myeong-So Eo during a meeting last week to discuss the expansion of air service from South Korea to Saipan. The meeting was held as part of a series of discussions that included conversations with South Korean airline and tour agency leaders. (OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR)
- CNMI NURSES WEEK-Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang poses with officers and members of the CNMI Nurses Association after signing the proclamation that designates the week from June 11-17, 2023, as CNMI Nurses Week. The association will celebrate the 36th year of CNMI Nurses Week on June 11 to June 17, 2023, with the theme “You Make a Difference” in celebration of the ways in which nurses strive to provide safe and high-quality patient care and map out the way to improve the healthcare system. - CHILD CARE TRAINING-Providers from centers subsidized by the Child Care and Development Fund recently completed the training for precautions in transporting children. This training was facilitated by Evergreen Learning Quality Care specialist Maricar I. Peña. It meets the required 12 health and safety topics all providers must complete and was made possible through funding from the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Child Care, CNMI CCDF program under the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.
