“It’s not how much money we will receive…it’s all about our island.”
That’s what the non-profit Matua Riders Group said following their participation in the “Beautify My Marianas” program. The group cleaned Garapan St. from Bank of Guam to Bank of Saipan on June 7, 2014, sweeping up 900 lbs of trash and debris.
“We were amazed how filthy the street was,” said the motorcycle riders’ organization in their post-cleanup report. “The sad part is, this is supposed to be a tourist attraction. We want [visitors] to come back and to spread the word of how beautiful our island is and how much we take pride in keeping it clean.”
The group conducted tree trimming, bush cutting, raking, and leaf blowing. They also collected trash from the drainage and along the road. Twenty-one volunteers of the group worked 3 1/2 hours on the cleanup.
“To us, the mission is still not complete,” the group said. “There is still a lot of work to be done, and we would like to continue this work on our next schedule.”
“Beautify My Marianas” is an island beautification program providing cash for cleanup projects. It is administered by the Marianas Visitors Authority and the Saipan Chamber of Commerce.
“Beautify My Marianas” aims to keep the Northern Marianas clean and pristine and offers a minimum of $100 to groups to pick up trash in designated areas on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. Applications are available at www.mymarianas.com and www.saipanchamber.com, the MVA, or SCC, and upon approval of their application, groups will be assigned an area that requires clean up. (MVA)
