Asahi and Hagu La’mun slipped past their opponents in the 2023 Budweiser Belau Amateur Softball Association League at the DanDan Softball Field last Sunday.
In close games, Asahi held onto their lead against the Man Amigos, 13-12, while Hagu La’mun did the same to win against Momma Charo, 14-13.
Asahi had a big eight-run second inning and held on to propel them eventually to the win later in the game. A home run was made by S.R. Matsutaro followed by base hits by Marino Hiroichi and Allen Teliu.
Three batters reached base on walks issued by Man Amigos pitcher Eric Palacios and he allowed two more singles before three outs ended the inning.
Man Amigos’ offense was almost nonexistent in the first four innings with only four runs scored. They found some traction in the fifth inning when back-to-back singles were made by Palacios, Peter Sablan, and Joey Dela Cruz.
The bases were cleared after a long triple off the bat of Mark Toves that made it a 11-8 game in favor of Asahi.
Asahi pitcher Dom Hideo hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning and Edgar Ito hit one himself in the seventh. Asahi scored two runs in the seventh but it was enough to clinch the win when Man Amigos failed to add any runs in their last chance at bat.
In the Hagu La’mun versus Momma Charo game, the former managed to hold on to the win even after Momma Charo drew first blood.
Momma Charo had a seven-run first inning with consecutive RBI singles from the top to the middle of the lineup, but Hagu La’mun showed up with the oomph in the third inning.
In their turn to attack, Hagu La’mun put up two in the second inning and nine in the third.
Sidney Camacho led it off with a walk and was immediately brought home after Tim Wesley’s triple. A double by Dennis Cruz in turn brought him home and John Acosta hit a triple of his own. Three singles were made when Ben Camacho hit a three-RBI home run.
Momma Charo could only conjure two runs in the second and third and the game was now in favor of Hagu La’mun, 11-9.
Both teams had a hard time scoring runs in the last innings as Momma Charo only produced four—which was insufficient as Hagu La’mun’s three runs in the last inning was enough to secure the win by one run.
Peleliu 18, Tuturamz 13
Peleliu continued their hot streak and won again, 18-13 against Tuturamz.
A lone home run was made by Peleliu’s Ben Hocog but they found ways to put runs on the board with singles through gaps in the Tuturamz’s defense.
Tuturamz could not score in three innings while Peleliu scored in all innings except one—but by the fourth inning, Tuturamz was up by three—12-9. However, Tuturamz lost the lead and the win when Peleliu fought back in the last couple innings and scored nine.
Sufa 13, Tokahao 4
Sufa dominated the defending champions Tokahao, 13-4.
Tokahao could only score two in the first inning from a two RBI double by Bruce Norita; and two in the third inning by a two-run home run by Mark Villagomez.
Meanwhile, it was a run frenzy for Sufa once again as Audie Maratita shot a two RBI home run in the first; another home run was made by Mario Aguon in the fifth; and a two-RBI home run by Paul Salalila capped off Sufa’s long ball for the day.
Redmen 15,
Aimeliik 1 Time 10
Aimeliik 1 Time have yet to win but not with lack of effort as they lost to the Redmen, 10-15.
Aimeliik scored one in the first and five in the second to lead by one as the Redmen scored five in the first but none in the second.
However, the Redmen scored four in the third as Aimeliik scored just three. It was the beginning of the end for Aimeliik when the Redmen racked up the runs as Lefty Shiro hit a home run in their three run fourth inning. They scored three more in the fifth and it was enough for the win as Aimeliik scored just one more in the last inning.
