Marianas Skate Series on May 27
The Marianas Surf Skate League presents the first ever skateboarding competition in the CNMI—the Marianas Skate Series—on Saturday, May 27, at the skatepark between the Gold’s Gym and the Garapan Central Park.
The first event of the day is the Youth Clinic for 12 years old and below. Local skateboarders Mikko from the High Tide Band and T.J. Deleon Guerrero will teach skateboarding basics and end with a small race.
The second event is a beginner competition called a Jam Session where beginners will face off freestyle format for a set amount of time. One winner will be selected.
The final event is for the expert level skateboarders who will be competing in an Olympic street skate format called 2/5/3.
Competitors will have two 45-second runs and five tricks to perform. They will be judged on creativity, degree of difficulty, and execution.
There will be prizes for first, second, and third—including brand new skateboard decks.
The Marianas Surf Skate League is a non-profit organization formed to promote the sports of surfing and skateboarding in the CNMI through events, competitions, and youth clinics.
Edward Manibusan, the organizer of the event said, “We want to see our athletes compete internationally. We also believe in protecting our environment, marine safety, and living healthy lifestyles through our sports. We want to help attract more people to the CNMI.”
MSSL first hosted the Boogie Down at Obyan bodyboarding competition in December 2022 and wants to make these competitions annual events.
MSSL thanks their sponsors MARPAC, Pokka, Boarderline, All Star Sporting Goods, DLNR Parks and Recreations, Marianas Visitors Authority, Saipan Mayor’s Office, Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Saipan Surf Company, Salty Skin Pacific, Local Bones, and Caravan Restaurant.
According to Manibusan, MSSL intends to adopt the Saipan Skate Park and raise funds to replace the broken solar lights, repair and resurface the concrete skate surface, and replace the rusting railings. “We are looking for donations and volunteers for our events and programs,” he said.
The official registration is on their Instagram account @marianas.surfskate.league.
