Shigeki Tenorio and Terra Allen ran an unconventional Run Saipan race last Saturday dubbed the Run Saipan Dash & Splash 5K ‘23 and won first place in their respective divisions.

Not only were the participants treated to a scenic back-of-the-woods run trail through the road heading into beautiful East Bay, they ended their race into a splash of said bay for a much-needed swim.

Tenorio dashed past 14 other participants and was the first with a time of 25:24. In the women’s division, Allen dashed and splashed first with a time of 27:20.

Joining Tenorio in the Top 3 in the men’s division were Chong Name Lee and Simon Necesito with times of 27:08 and 29:32, respectively. Runners-up to Allen in the women’s division were Chiharu Sato who clocked in at 33:08 and Elizabeth Church with 38:25.

This race is a Dr. Ron Snyder original and is a staple event dedicated only to the most hardcore of runners. “This wasn’t a typical race,” he said. “The time doesn’t stop until you hit the water.”

“It was a challenging course too. Lots of hills, rough roads, and then a leap into East Bay to complete the splash. For some people the jump into the water was a real challenge and took some time to gather the nerve. But everyone finished and I think everyone had fun. And that was the goal,” said Snyder.

He added that runner “Leo Wania was great. He had another commitment so he came really late but started on his own and joined us at the finish line.”

As for Tenorio, he said that the race was fun.

“I was first nervous about jumping into the East Bay cliff after the 5K run. But when I did, it felt so refreshing and I was able to cool down,” he said.

“Even from the beginning, surrounded by green nature, Tapochao mountain view, Laolao ocean view…. I loved it! I’m definitely going to join again if there’s any in the future!”
