NMHC invites entries for writing contest

The Northern Marianas Humanities Council is once again hosting the My Marianas Writing Contest, this time focusing on what “home” means to young writers in the CNMI.

This year, NMHC is partnering with the CNMI Scholarship Office to offer this writing contest, which is open to all interested CNMI high school students from ninth to twelfth grade.

The theme for this year’s competition is “Senses of Home” and requires the writer to describe their island creatively and effectively through their five senses. All essays must be three to five pages long, double-spaced, and should demonstrate not only creative but skillfully descriptive writing, as the author attempts to describe the Marianas as a home.

The overall best submission will win $500, with the second placer getting $400 and third-place winner will get $300. The winner’s essays will also be featured in the local newspapers and on the NMHC website.

Submit your entries to  info@nmhcouncil.org. The last day to submit entries is May 4,2023, at 4pm.

NMHC held a similar contest last year, but with a focus on the writers’ memories of food and cooking.
