The Lady Blue Jays are undefeated coming out of Round 1 in the women’s division of the 2023 Budweiser Belau Amateur Softball Association League as they held back last Sunday at the DanDan Softball Field.
Top of the lineup Kianu Aldan and Rayna Deleon Guerrero started their offense with inside-the-park homeruns each in the first inning after a run by the Lady Legals for a 4-1 game.
Back-to-back errors by the Lady Blue Jays on the field allowed the Lady Legals to capitalize in the second inning as multiple hits from the middle of the lineup to the top brought in eight runs to steal the lead.
The Lady Blue Jays then retaliated in the third as Rayna Deleon Guerrero, Bert Camacho, and Bong Babauta got on base via errors and ended the inning with five runs, for a tied 9-9 game.
The Lady Legals played great defense as line drives up the middle caused their pitcher Jovie Omar to take a dive twice but still caught the ball for the essential outs.
However, the Lady Blue Jays offense supported their pitcher til the very end as in the fourth, three runs came in and in the last, two more came for a 14-12 game.
Bert Camacho, Lady Blue Jays pitcher, tried to stop the bleeding and only allowed one run each inning until the last and managed to hold off the Lady Legals from doing further damage. The Lady Legals only put up one run at their last at bat for a close 14-13 final score.
With this win, the Lady Blue Jays have won all four of their games since the beginning of the season last month.
In the other women’s division game that day, Team BDE defeated Lady Sufa, 8-6.
It was quiet for the first couple of innings but that changed in the third when the first two batters got on base and were brought in by Emy Oiteron and Allana Sumang for a 2-0 game.
Lady Sufa was still run-less in the third and in the fourth, BDE connected for two more runs. But in the fourth, Lady Sufa were finally on the scoreboard with three runs for a close 4-3 game, still in favor of BDE.
BDE were biding their time as they went scoreless for two innings as Lady Sufa scored two in the sixth. However, BDE broke through when it mattered with four big runs and shut out Lady Sufa as they brought it only one run in the last inning.
Results of the men’s division will be posted in the next issues of Saipan Tribune.
